BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS

Following the passage of the Control, Regulate, and Tax Audit Use of Marijuana Act (Proposition 64) in 2016, the CHP awards competitive grants to local governments to address the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol through the CTFGP. The CTFGP intends to educate, prevent, and enforce programs to help communities combat impaired driving and to create safer roadways in California.

In June 2024, the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) received an Intent to Award letter from CHP, confirming that its Fiscal Year 2024-25 CTFGP grant proposal was selected for funding in the amount of $164,536. The one-year grant period of performance is July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. The grant funds will be used for overtime pay to conduct Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoints, DUI Saturation Patrols, public educational trainings, as well as continued training for officers in the area of drug and alcohol detection and to effectively identify DUI drivers. Throughout the grant period, OPD anticipates a reduction in DUI driving and DUI-related traffic collisions as a result of the programs funded by this grant. Grant funds will also be used for the purchase of a vehicle that will be deployed during enforcement operations to aid in increased public awareness of impaired driving.
