BACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS
On May 21, 2003, the City Council adopted City Council Policy 100-55: "Policies and Procedures for Naming and Dedicating City Facilities." City Council Policy 100-55 provides a timeline, procedures, and priority categories for the naming of facilities. The timeline states that in April of each year, the City Council must first designate facilities for which they will consider applications for renaming. On April 9, 2025, City Council identified Park Site 1 at El Corazon and the skate spot at John Landes Community Park as eligible for renaming.
The Parks and Recreation Director made group and individual applications available to the public with a deadline to submit nominations by June 1, 2025.
Council Policy 100-55 stipulates: "whenever possible, all City facilities will be named for their geographic location. Creating a name based on the facility's geographic location should be considered first. The geographic location may be based on the identification of the facility with a specific place, neighborhood, major street, regional area of the City or the City's name if the facility serves the entire community." Other facility naming considerations include a prominent form of topography, cultural or historical precedent or, under extraordinary circumstances, the name of a person or group.
